What he likes about Second Set

Second Set is the perfect combination of so many different genres of music. There is rock, blues, jazz, funk, jam, and more. I love that I play in a band that has no rules. One minute our music sounds like we are marching down Bourbon St in New Orleans, the next we are playing like a mainstream jam band. Music is an amazing form of expression and Second Set has merely become a vehicle of that expression. I wrote a little personal history of Second Set that says more.

His musical influences

The music that moved me the most is the music I listened to in college. When I was attending University of Colorado, Boulder in the early 90's, bands like Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band, Leftover Salmon, Phish, and Ben Harper were spending their weekends and summers playing Boulder venues like the Fox Theater and Red Rocks Amphitheater. Each week there was a new band from the South or from the East ripping it up at the Fox and Red Rocks. Through word of mouth we flocked to these venues and watched these rising stars play their hearts out for as low as $2 a show. This was the first time I saw improvisational music done well outside of Jazz.

Music he's listening to

Lately I have been listening to a lot of UK artists like Gomez and David Gray. Some of my other favorites include the Black Crowes, Lenny Kravitz's "Mama Said" era material and anything by the Greyboy Allstars. I am big fan of mixed tapes and bootlegs. I keep a decent collection of Phish, DMB, and Widespread Panic live tapes always within an arms reach of the wheel.
